Love Encourages

In a world where it's easy to tear others down, love builds others up.

Read Hebrews 10:23-25

Discussion Questions:

  • Just like kids playing soccer, we all need people cheering for us to keep going and not give up. Who is someone who has encouraged you in your faith?
  • In Hebrews 10:23-25, we see that biblical community is characterized by encouragement.  What is encouragement?
  • The word parakaleo can be translated encourage, exhort, comfort.  It literally means to walk alongside someone.  How does this help define encouragement?
  • In John 14:16 Jesus teaches about the Holy Spirit, who he calls the paraclete - one called alongside us as our helper and comforter.  How does the Holy Spirit encourage you?
  • What is a Scripture you turn to often for encouragement?
  • Unhelpful ways to encourage:
    • Why is fake positivity (like the SNL Spartan cheerleaders) unhelpful? What is a helpful alternative?
    • Cheering for everything someone does is not necessarily helpful.  How can we be encouraging to a person without encouraging sin?
    • Misusing Scripture is unhelpful.  Sometimes we throw out Scripture flippantly or abrasively. What is a helpful alternative to this?
  • How is being an encourager like being a midwife, helping something new be birthed? How does this image help you see your role as an encourager? What is helpful and unhelpful in a midwife?
  • How is being an encourager like playing a bit part in a play? How can making everything about us keep it from being about Jesus?
  • How can you encourage yourself (1 Samuel 30:6)?
  • Read Hebrews 3:12-13
    • According to that passage, when do we encourage?
    • What is the result of true encouragement? What happens to the heart of the encourager and the one encouraged?
  • What are practical ways you've been encouraged and how do you commit to encourage others?
